Beer wine is made with home brew beer by making it with a high alcohol content of the order of that of wine. You can make it with lots of malt for a malty flavour and malt sugar content so that you get a heavy, strong flavoured brew.
Home brewed beer wine has an alcohol level the same as for grape wine: about 10% to 14% alcohol by volume. For a strong flavoured malty hoppy drop, your home brew beer wine is made using only malts for sugar, instead of adding cane or grain sugars, in sufficient quantities to get the extra alcohol level. Liquid malt extract in a can and powdered malt extract in a plastic bag by the kilo or pound are used for your unhopped malt beer wine recipe.

Because of the rich malty flavour, extra hops can be added the beer wine to reduce the sweet taste of the residual unfermented sugars. Hops can add a bitterness flavour to offset the maltiness as well as lighten the strong flavour. This is where you can experiment and enjoy your hobby and create a balance of sweetness, body, alcohol and beer flavour.
How To Get Extra Alcohol
If you have been involved with home made beer brewing you have been brewing with malt and hops (combined in a can kit), sugar (cane sugar or dextrose grain sugar), yeast and water. The quantity of added sugar largely determines the alcohol level; and for normal home brew beer this alcohol level is of the order of 5% by volume. Wine has an alcohol level typically of 10%. Instead of using sugar to raise the alcohol level of your beer wine recipe, the way to do it is to add malt concentrate, either liquid or powdered, sufficient to attain 10% or more alcohol by volume.
Malty Flavour
Because the malt is about 25% unfermentable sugar, the brew will have a high degree of body and malty flavour and could be very sweet compared with normal home brew. To suit your taste, hops can be added to give a more bitter taste. Experiment with your beer wine recipe.
Balance Malt and Hops
When you brew with a can kit, the manufacturer has balanced the malt and hops flavours to suit that style of beer based on using 1kg of sugar. Increase the malt and that balance is changed. This is basic with variation to any beer recipe and is a source of experimentation which is one of the great aspects of your favourite hobby of home made beer brewing. Hops add a bitterness flavour and a special aroma to your malty hoppy drop. By adding extra hops to your strongly malted brew you can re-balance the flavour and at the same time achieve a full bodied, high alcohol level beer wine.
Serving Beer Wine
Home beer brewing has unlimited pleasurable aspects as a hobby and making beer wine with different variations for malts, hops and sugars is an example.
